Expressair Aviation is formed
The parent company of the MAAS Aviation Group, Expressair Aviation, is formed in Ireland. The company secures its first major contract and is selected by SAS to re-livery its entire fleet during a period of radical reform within the airline.
Expressair Aviation begin operations in Shannon and becomes one of the first Western aircraft painting companies to include Eastern Block operators in its portfolio. And so begins a strong bond between MAAS Aviation and many of the leading Eastern European and Russian airlines which survives to the present day.
Expressair Aviation is painting 70 Aircraft p.a. and also includes interior refurbishment in its portfolio of services. The company is approached by aircraft leasing giant Guinness Peat Aviation (now GECAS) which expresses an interest to acquire a majority stake in the company and in 1989, GPA Expressair is formed.
Supported by new shareholder Guinness Peat Aviation, the company opens a purpose built aircraft painting and interior refurbishment facility in central Europe located at Maastricht-Aachen Airport in the Netherlands. The company expands into VIP aircraft interior refurbishment and reconfigurations and is awarded a contract to design a new standard of VIP Interiors of TU 134, TU 154 and Ilyushion 62 Aircraft on behalf of OEM and Eastern European Governments.

After the acquisition of GPA by GECAS, the original shareholders of Expressair Aviation re-acquire the shares held by GPA.
Team Aer Lingus / FLS - Expressair Collaboration
Expressair Aviation partners with Team Aer Lingus / FLS Aerospace, Dublin, Ireland to provide a combined delivery of Seat overhaul, Cabin Refurbishment and Aircraft Painting Services. The partnership lasts six years until Team Aer Lingus / FLS is acquired by SR Technics.
Maastricht Aviation achieves prominence as a trading division of Expressair Aviation and the identity of the company becomes known as MAAS Aviation.
MAAS Aviation partners with Fokker Services to provide aircraft painting services to complement the engineering and maintenance services provided by Fokker Services at its Woensdrecht facility in the Netherlands near Antwerp.
MAAS Aviation wins a contract from Airbus to paint new Airbus aircraft at its Maastricht facility under an Airbus external painting programme. The company’s Maastricht facility achieves Airbus qualification and is accredited as an approved Airbus paint shop.
Quality Management Certification
MAAS Aviation achieves the aerospace quality standard EN9100 and is one of a small number of aircraft painting companies worldwide to have achieved this standard.
MAAS Aviation Launches New Corporate Identity
All operations of the Expressair Aviation Group which include Maastricht Aviation Aircraft Services, B.V. come together under the new corporate identity of MAAS Aviation. Our new logo – a brightly coloured feather – references the pioneers of flight who looked to birds for inspiration. Feathers are considered one of the most complex structures found in the animal kingdom – they aid flight, provide thermal insulation and waterproof protection and provide a distinctive outer covering. These attributes are seen as relevant and representative of the business of MAAS Aviation – the painting of commercial aircraft.
MAAS Aviation wins a contract to design, construct and operate a paint shop at the Airbus Finkenwerder FAL in Hamburg, Germany. This world-class project was delivered on budget and in record time to meet the December 2012 enter-into-service date.
MAAS Aviation Achieves Airbus Qualification in Hamburg, Germany
The company’s facility at Airbus Finkenwerder achieves Airbus qualification having consistently demonstrated high quality and on time service delivery to exacting OEM standards.
Airbus awards MAAS Aviation a contract to design and construct an OEM Hangar and operate as its painting partner for its US Final Assembly Line to be located in Mobile, Alabama. The enter-into-service date of the first of two paint shops was delivered for the end of 2015.
MAAS Aviation announces the construction of a new state-of-the-art twin bay MRO paint facility at Brookley Aeroplex, Mobile, Alabama capable of handling aircraft up to B757. The construction of these MRO paint shops presents an opportunity for the company to co-locate aircraft painting operations with Airbus and VT Mobile Aerospace and many years of successful partnership with these globally significant partners is envisaged. The enter-into-service target date for this facility is Q1 2017.
Finkenweder Paint Shop Facility
MAAS Aviation is selected by Airbus to design, build and operate a second single aisle paint shop facility at Airbus, Finkenwerder in Hamburg, Germany to be located adjacent to MAAS’s existing single aisle paint shop facility. Construction of the new Airbus facility began in late 2015 and is scheduled to be in service in Q4 2016. In addition, MAAS has also been selected by Airbus for future expansion opportunities at the Finkenwerder site to cater for the projected increase in the production rates for the A320 family aircraft.
Mobile, Alabama Paint Shop
MAAS Aviation announces the completion of the first of two single aisle paint shops at the Airbus Final Assembly Line in Mobile, Alabama. This world-class project was delivered on budget and on time after a 16 month construction timeline to meet the end of 2015 enter-into-service date.
Another First for MAAS Aviation – the company paints its first aircraft in Mobile, Alabama
MAAS Aviation paints the first ever Airbus aircraft assembled in the US. The livery is that of jetBlue.
Construction of MAAS Aviation’s new Twin Bay MRO Painting Facility in Mobile, Alabama commences
The ground breaking ceremony for MAAS Aviation’s twin bay facility at Brookley Aeroplex, Mobile takes place on February 22nd, 2016 and is attended by local and State dignitaries. The event is widely reported on local media.
Group managing Director
Darragh Hall co-founded Expressair Aviation Ltd, the parent co. of MAAS Aviation, in 1983. He has over 30 years experience in the aircraft coating industry and has overseen the development of MAAS Aviation into one of Europe’s most quality focussed providers of specialist painting services to airlines throughout the continent, both at MRO level and through the company successfully securing long term Airbus contracts for OEM work in Hamburg,Germany.
Latterly, he has also steered the company growth into North America, again as part of the Airbus project in the US.
Darragh is married to Esther and has three children and 6 grandchildren. His interests are Motor Boating and all sports, most notably the Irish International football team. He lives in Dublin.
Commercial Director and CFO
Tim Macdougald is an accountant with over 30 years business experience, both as an employee and an Entrepreneur. He joined MAAS Aviation in 2009 and has contributed significantly to the sizeable growth achieved since then. His role in setting the Commercial direction of the co. and securing the necessary funding to support the growth plans has been instrumental in building the platform for development over the last several years. His prior experience of developing business in International markets has been of real value to MAAS at this stage of it’s expansion.
Tim is married to Emer and has three children. He is a ‘petrol head’ and enjoys weekend spins on one of his several motorcycles. He lives in Dublin.
Sales and Customer Services Director
Fran Carew is Sales and Customer Services Director for MAAS since 2012. He has a near 30 year history with the company during which time he has been based, principally, in Holland overseeing the growth of the MRO business there. He has built long term customer relationships with aircraft operator customers and is proud of the reputation the co. has developed over it’s long tenure at Maastricht Airport and from which it takes it’s name.
Fran is married to Patricia, has one step-daughter and lives in Maastricht. He enjoys painting of a different kind in his spare time, being a skilled artist.
Mark Gidman was appointed Operations Director in 2012. He has over 30 years aviation industry experience, having joined the RAF in the mid 80’s. Mark started his career with MAAS as a painter with the co. in Ireland and Europe. He is currently overseeing an operational logistics programme that has grown significantly in recent years and is successfully managing teams in multiple locations while ensuring that the MAAS commitment to a quality finish is maintained.
Mark is married to Hester and lives in Hamburg. He continues to fly the flag for Stoke City FC, his hometown team.
